About the FSCS

The FSCS offers free and automatic protection for your savings, up to £85,000

If anything happens to your bank, building society or credit union, the FSCS automatically refunds savings up to £85,000 within 7 days. You won't have to do anything.

98% of the UK population have less than £85,000 in savings and are covered by the £85,000 protection limit.

The FSCS was established over 10 years ago. We have helped more than 4½ million people and paid out more than £26 billion in compensation.

Do conditions apply?

Your savings are FSCS protected if:

  • You have less than £85,000 of savings
  • Your savings are with banks, building societies or credit unions which are authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA)

Your savings might not be FSCS protected if:

  • You have savings with banks, building societies or credit unions which are not authorised by the PRA
  • You have more than £85,000 in an account or more than £170,000 in a joint account
  • You have more than £85,000 (or £170,000 in joint accounts) split across banks, building societies and credit unions which share a banking authorisation

As a saver with a substantial amount of money, you should always check to see if your providers share a banking authorisation to avoid exceeding the £85,000 protection limit per banking authorisation.

Some of your savings may be at risk

The FSCS protects savings up to £85,000 with authorised firms and applies to individuals and small businesses. The highlighted fields show savings that may be at risk where:

  • You are holding more than £85,000 with one firm
  • You are holding more than £85,000 with two or more brands that are part of the same banking group, share an authorisation and one £85,000 limit applies. So savings in excess of this may not be protected by the FSCS

The £85,000 limit applies to individuals. If your savings are in a joint account this limit increases to £170,000.
